What Our Garage Door Safety Inspection Covers

We test and check:

• Auto-reverse: the door must reverse when it meets a solid object on the floor.
• Photo-eye reverse: the door must reverse when the sensor beam is broken on the way down.
• Door balance, tested by hand with the opener disconnected.
• Spring condition and sizing, and on extension springs, whether safety cables are in place.
• Cable condition at the drums and the bottom brackets.
• Hinges, rollers and tracks, and whether every bolt is secure.
• Opener force and travel limit settings.
• The manual release: it has to release the door when pulled.
• Whether the wall button is mounted high enough and within sight of the door, as current safety guidance calls for.

When to Get a Garage Door Inspection

Before you list a home, because a door that fails a reversal test tends to show up in the buyer's inspection. After you buy one, because you don't know what the last owner did or didn't maintain. And after anything hits the door.

It's also worth booking when a new baby, young children or a dog join the household, so you know the door will stop and reverse on its way down.

Extension Spring Safety Cables

If your door has extension springs along the horizontal tracks, look for a cable running through the middle of each spring. That cable keeps a broken spring from flying across the garage, and many older installations don't have them.
