Matching a Replacement Remote to Your Opener

Remotes are matched to the opener's manufacturer and its code system. Modern openers use rolling codes that change with every press, so the remote has to be paired with the opener, not just set to the same frequency. Older openers used fixed codes, sometimes set with small switches inside the remote.

Universal remotes work with many openers but not all. If you're not sure what you have, the label on the side of the opener's motor unit tells us everything we need.

What to Do If a Garage Door Remote Is Lost or Stolen

Clear the opener's memory. That erases every paired remote and keypad, and then we reprogram the ones you still have. It takes a few minutes, and a remote left in a stolen car is no longer a key to your house.

It's also worth doing when you sell a car, after a car break-in, or after valet parking somewhere that made you uneasy.

Programming Car Garage Door Buttons (HomeLink)

Most newer cars have built-in garage door buttons, often HomeLink. They can be tricky to program with rolling-code openers, because you also have to press the learn button on the opener within a short window. Some newer vehicles need an adapter to work with certain openers.
