Belt Drive vs. Chain Drive vs. Wall-Mount Openers

How to choose:

  • Belt drive: the quiet choice. Worth it whenever there's a bedroom or living space above or beside the garage, and the most popular option for homes today.
  • Chain drive: durable and less expensive, but you'll hear it through the house. A good fit for a detached garage.
  • Wall-mount (jackshaft): mounts beside the torsion shaft and leaves the ceiling completely clear. Ideal for garages with overhead storage racks or very high ceilings. Requires a torsion spring door.
  • Horsepower: a 1/2 HP opener handles most single and standard double doors. Heavier insulated, three-layer and oversized doors call for 3/4 HP or more.

California's Battery Backup Law (SB-969)

Since July 1, 2019, California SB-969 has required battery backup on residential garage door openers sold or installed in the state. The law followed wildfire evacuations where families lost power and couldn't get their cars out of the garage.

Every opener we install includes a backup battery, so your door keeps working during an outage. The batteries last a few years, and most openers beep or flash to let you know when it's time for a new one.

How We Install and Set Up Your Opener

Mounting the motor unit and rail is the easy part. The setup is what makes the door safe and the opener last.

We set the travel limits so the door seals at the floor without pushing into it and stops cleanly at the top. We adjust the force to the lowest setting that moves the door reliably, so it reverses if something is underneath. Then we align and test the safety sensors and run a reversal test with an object on the floor.

Before any of that, we check that the door is balanced. An opener installed on a heavy, unbalanced door wears out early, so we fix the balance first.

Smart Garage Door Openers With Wi-Fi

Most new openers include Wi-Fi and a phone app, so you can check whether the door is open and close it from anywhere. Some add camera options and timed auto-close. If you've ever driven halfway to work wondering whether you left the garage open, you'll use it.

Garage Door Opener Installation & Replacement FAQs

How long does garage door opener installation take?

Replacing an existing opener usually takes two to three hours, including setup and safety testing. A first-time install or a switch to a wall-mount opener takes longer, because there's bracing, wiring and sensor work to do.

Can I buy my own opener and have you install it?

Yes. Tell us the make and model when you call so we know what bracing, wiring and accessories the install needs, and we'll quote the installation.

Do I need a new opener if I'm getting a new garage door?

Not necessarily. If your current opener is healthy and rated for the new door's weight, it can usually stay. The springs are what must be matched to the new door, and we size those on every installation.

How long will a battery backup run my garage door?

Long enough to get your cars out during an outage and close the door behind you. The exact number of cycles depends on the opener and the battery's age. It's designed to get you through an outage, not to run the door on battery for days.

How much does a new garage door opener cost installed?

It depends on the drive type, horsepower and features you choose, so we start with a free estimate. Tell us about your door and garage on the phone and we can often price it right there. Either way, you'll have a firm price before any work starts.
