When Garage Door Panel Replacement Works

What decides whether a section swap makes sense:

• Whether the manufacturer still makes your door model and panel design.
• Whether the color can be matched. A new section won't exactly match a door that's had years of Southern California sun.
• How many sections are damaged. One is straightforward, two is worth weighing, and three or more usually points to a new door.
• Whether the damage is only in the outer skin, or has torn the hinge and fastener points.
• Whether the bottom section is involved, since it carries the cable brackets and the bottom seal.

Matching a New Panel to Your Existing Door

A new section on an older door is usually visible if you know where to look, because the original panels have faded. On a white door it's often barely noticeable. On a dark or bold color, especially on a south or west-facing garage, the difference can be obvious.

Rusted Bottom Section Replacement

The bottom section usually fails first. It sits where water collects, and it holds the brackets the lift cables attach to. Rust there weakens the exact spot the door is lifted from, so it's a structural problem as well as a cosmetic one.
