What Gets Damaged When a Car Hits a Garage Door

Where we look, in order:

• The section that was hit: dented, creased or split, depending on the impact.
• The vertical track, which sits right at bumper height and bends easily.
• Rollers and hinges at the point of impact, often torn out of the section.
• The lift cable on that side, which can come off the drum when the door is knocked out of square.
• The bottom bracket, if the impact was low.
• The opener, if it was driving the door at the time and kept going.

Everyone looks at the dent. What decides whether the door is safe is whether the springs and cables are still doing their job: cables seated on the drums, springs intact, and the door sitting square in the opening.

A door with cosmetic damage but sound hardware can still be used. A door that looks fine but has a cable off the drum can come down hard. Either way, have it checked before you run it again.
