Cosmetic Dents vs. Structural Damage

The outer skin of a steel door is thin. A ball, a bike or a slow-moving bumper can dent it without changing how the door runs. That kind of damage can often be left alone, and on a single-layer door it can sometimes be worked out to a good finish.

What matters is the frame of each section and the hinge points. A crease running through a hinge, or a section bowed enough that it no longer sits flat against its neighbors, changes how the door carries its weight. Those sections need replacing.

Bowed Garage Doors and Reinforcement Struts

A door that bows outward across its width is usually a sign of opener strain rather than an impact. On a wide, lightweight door, the opener pulling at one point can flex the top section every cycle until it stays bent. We repair the damage and add a reinforcing strut across the section.

Struts are also what we add when an opener is installed on a door that never had one, and they're inexpensive protection for any wide single-layer door.

Repair or Replace a Damaged Garage Door

One damaged section on an otherwise sound door is usually worth replacing on its own, as long as it can still be matched. When damage spans several sections, or the door is older and thin, a new door is often the better value.
