Nylon vs. Steel Garage Door Rollers

Many builder-grade doors come with plain steel rollers and open bearings. They're loud, they rust, and the bearings wear out. Nylon rollers with sealed ball bearings are dramatically quieter, and on most doors, new rollers are the single most effective way to quiet things down.

Roller stems also come in different lengths, and the stem has to match the hinge and track. A roller that's the right size but the wrong stem length sits badly in the track, so we match both.

Cracked Garage Door Hinges

Hinges are numbered by position, and each number holds the sections at the right angle as the door curves up into the ceiling track. The wrong hinge in the wrong spot makes the door bind at the curve.

Watch for cracks around the screws, especially on thinner steel doors. Once a hinge cracks, the section it holds flexes every time the door moves, and the tear spreads into the door itself. Caught early, it's a new hinge. Caught late, it's a new section.

Why We Replace Rollers as a Set

Rollers wear together. If two are noisy on a ten-year-old door, the rest aren't far behind, and replacing them one at a time costs you more in the long run than doing the whole set.
