Who Needs a Wall-Mount Garage Door Opener

A wall-mount opener is a great fit for:

  • Garages with overhead storage racks where a ceiling rail would be in the way.
  • Garages with a vehicle lift that needs the ceiling space.
  • High or vaulted garage ceilings, where a standard opener needs long, awkward bracing.
  • Homes with a bedroom or living space over the garage, since there's no rail or trolley to carry noise.
  • Anyone who wants a clean, uncluttered garage ceiling.

Wall-Mount Opener Installation Requirements

Jackshaft openers only work on torsion spring doors, because they turn the torsion bar itself. A door with extension springs has to be converted to torsion first.

The door also needs to be well balanced, since the opener turns the shaft instead of pulling on the top of the door. Most models need a certain amount of space beside the torsion bar, and many include a cable tension sensor and an automatic lock. We'll check your garage and tell you if it's a good fit.

Quieter Operation and a Clear Ceiling

With no rail, chain or trolley above your car, a wall-mount opener removes most of what carries noise into the house. It's one of the quietest ways to run a garage door.

Can a wall-mount opener work on any garage door?

It needs a torsion spring system and enough space beside the torsion bar. Doors with extension springs have to be converted to torsion first. We'll check your door and let you know.

Are jackshaft garage door openers quieter?

Generally yes, and noticeably. With no rail, chain or trolley over the car, most of the parts that carry noise into the house are gone.

Does a wall-mount opener need an outlet near the door?

Yes. It needs power on the wall beside the door, near the end of the torsion bar. If there's no outlet there, one will need to be added before the install, and we'll tell you exactly where it should go.
